company in the country.
The company
was granted concessions via an agreement signed in 1992 and initially went into
full operation in 1997 as part of the government’s incentive to promote private
sector investment in the country.

The company
is principally involved in the manufacturing and distribution of canned fish,
can making and the production and sale of fishmeal, which is used in the
production of animal feed. The cannery
is located at Lae, Papua New Guinea’s industrial center and second largest
city. IFC currently produces 425g, 200g
and 155g canned mackerel sizes primarily for the domestic market. The Company
would be embarking on the production of tuna products such as frozen loins and
canned tuna for both export and domestic markets
VISION STATEMENT
To be the premier canned fish processing
company in Papua New Guinea (“PNG”) and the South Pacific.
IFC PRODUCT RANGE
The brand of
canned mackerel that is manufactured locally and marketed presently by IFC is
“Besta”. Besta canned mackerel is a high quality premium blue mackerel that is
available in two varieties, Natural Oil and Tomato Sauce. They are packed in
425g (15oz), 200g (7oz) and 155g (5.5oz).
IFC distributes
locally and exports its mackerel product only to the neighboring Solomon
Islands.
It also
imports canned tuna from Thailand, packed in 185g and distributes locally under
the Besta brand name.
Earlier this
year IFC began expanding its production facilities to cater for tuna export.
IFC’S OPERATION
IFC believes
that it must continue to grow by expanding its operations. In line with this
objective, it has utilized and expanded its existing production facilities and
took advantage of its core competency in mackerel processing and is embarking
into tuna production.
The tuna
project which has come on stream at the end of 2009 is a major undertaking and
will propel IFC to become one of the leading tuna processing companies in this
region. This project is inline with the Papua New Guinea government’s aim of
making the country as the tuna centre of the world.
The project
will mean not only injection of substantial investment to the plant but also an
increase in employment opportunities by 2000 new employees over the next 3 to 4
years of the project phase.
The spill
over effect of the project to the local economy will be far reaching. The tuna
loin and canned tuna which are geared mainly for exports will help open up more
markets for the company.
Installation
of IFC’s Tuna processing facilities has already been complete and is ready for
production.
